چکیده

This paper investigates burst segmentation for the evaluation of acoustic cues used to identify unvoiced French stops. Unlike other works which utilize a fixed length window, our approach consists in segmenting bursts into transient and frication noise. The transient is found by minimizing the sum of spectral variances of transient and frication noise over the burst. The spectral variance criterion has the advantage of being sensitive both to energy deviations and spectral variations. Additional correction procedures augment the robustness of the segmentation against the presence of spurious noises during the closure and the determination of the voicing onset with delay. The relevance of our segmentation method has been evaluated by comparing the characteristics of the main spectral peak (energy prominence versus frequency) in the transient segmented by our method with those of the full burst. Our experiments showed that bursts segmented by our method allow a better discrimination between the three places of articulation.

Phonotactic and acoustic cues for word segmentation in English

This study investigates the influence of both phonotactic and acoustic cues on the segmentation of spoken English. Listeners detected embedded English words in nonsense sequences (word spotting). Words aligned with phonotactic boundaries were easier to detect than words without such alignment. Acoustic cues to boundaries could also have signaled word boundaries, especially when word onsets lack...

Effects of syntactic expectations on speech segmentation.

Although the effect of acoustic cues on speech segmentation has been extensively investigated, the role of higher order information (e.g., syntax) has received less attention. Here, the authors examined whether syntactic expectations based on subject-verb agreement have an effect on segmentation and whether they do so despite conflicting acoustic cues. Although participants detected target word...

Acoustic-phonetic Cues to Word Boundary Location: Evidence from Word Spotting

This research examined acoustic-phonetic cues to word boundary location in French consonant clusters, and assessed their use in on-line lexical segmentation. Two word-spotting experiments manipulated the alignment between word targets and syllable boundaries. A perceptual cost of such misalignment was observed for obstruent-liquid clusters but not for /s/ + obstruent clusters. For the former cl...

Automatic Segmentation of the Temporal Evolution of Isolated Acoustic Musical Instrument Sounds Using Spectro-temporal Cues

The automatic segmentation of isolated musical instrument sounds according to the temporal evolution is not a trivial task. It requires a model capable of capturing regions such as the attack, decay, sustain and release accurately for many types of instruments with different modes of excitation. The traditional ADSR amplitude envelope model does not apply universally to acoustic musical instrum...
